Welcome to the FreeHand 5.0.1 ReadMe. Why is there a FreeHand 5.0.1? It’s simple—because we are committed to bringing you the finest graphics software in the world. As we receive feedback from our users, we are driven to address every error that we can. As a result, we periodically release interim software updates containing fixes and adjustments. If you are reading this, it’s because you are updating to FreeHand 5.0.1, the first interim release of the award winning FreeHand 5!
Important note: Please turn off your extensions before updating FreeHand. If your machine uses System 7.0 or later, extensions are disabled by restarting the computer while holding down the Shift key until you see the message “Welcome to Macintosh. Extensions off.”
The file you have received, “5.0.1 Update IE.sea” installs a folder named “FreeHand 5.0.1 Update IE.” In addition to the ReadMe that you are now reading, this folder contains 3 versions of the FreeHand 5.0.1 updater. Because you have installed the International English version of the updater, your folder contains the following 3 files:
“FH 5.0.1 68k Update IE” updates FreeHand 5.0 for 680x0 Macintoshes beginning with the Mac II series and continuing through the Centris and Quadra series.
“FH 5.0.1 PPC Update IE” updates FreeHand 5.0 for Power Macintoshes.
“FH 5.0.1 Univ Update IE” updates a Universal installation of FreeHand 5.0. A Universal installation contains extra code to run in native mode on both 680x0 Macintoshes and Power Macintoshes. This Universal version would have been installed using the Custom install option in the original FreeHand 5.0 Installer.
If you don’t know which Installer to use, try them one at a time. Only the correct Installer will make changes to FreeHand—the others will return an error message and leave FreeHand unchanged. The Installer will only work on the International English version of FreeHand 5.0. (There are separate versions of the Installer files for American English.) Versions of FreeHand in other languages will include the 5.0.1 changes.
What is fixed in FreeHand 5.0.1?
The following printing difficulties have been fixed:
• Printing a wide (landscape) page with a paper type of “Custom” selected in the Print Options dialog and height/width values entered by the user would result in a warning that the page does not fit on the paper. If printed, the output would be cropped.
• When printing to some PostScript printers (Level 1 printers and most imagesetters) with a paper size other than “Custom” selected in the Print Options dialog, an error would cause the page size from the Print Options dialog to be ignored, instead utilizing the paper size as specified in the Page Setup dialog. This problem generally tended to crop large pages to a smaller size, such as Letter.
• Printing to a device whose PPD specified that the paper area of the selected paper type defaults to “wide” sometimes resulted in the image being incorrectly oriented and cropped in the final output. For example, this phenomena occurred when selecting the A2 paper type and printing to an AGFA SelectSet 7000.
• Items cut or copied from a FreeHand document and pasted into another application would not print to a PostScript printer.
• Printing a document containing tab leaders occasionally crashed a level 1 printer if there were numerous leader characters.
• Printed tab leaders sometimes appeared in the wrong position if the text was rotated.
The following FreeHand 3 importing errors were corrected:
• An imported FreeHand 3 document with guides would sometimes crash if there were a significantly greater number of horizontal guides than vertical guides.
• Importing a FreeHand 3 document containing lines of text with blank spaces at the end would sometimes result in garbled characters.
• An imported FreeHand 3 document containing empty paragraphs would occasionally lose the empty paragraphs and experience corrupted character attributes.
The following FreeHand 3 exporting error was corrected:
• Files exported in the FreeHand 3 format from within FreeHand 5.0 would cause FreeHand 3 to crash if the user attempted to pull out a ruler guide. Guides are no longer included when exporting a document to FreeHand 3. Creating new guides in an exported document from within FreeHand 3 no longer crashes FreeHand 3.
Other Fixes
• An occasional crash when quitting the Power Mac version has been corrected.
• Speed when picking and dragging objects has been greatly improved in document with a large number of objects.
Some advice on auto-expanding text blocks:
Problem:
When FreeHand 5.0 is installed for the first time, it enables a number of new features and updates from FreeHand 4.0. One of these new features is the “Auto Expanding Text Container.” This feature allows text blocks to automatically resize as text is added or removed. This feature is especially useful when titling both horizontal and vertically. There are trade offs, however, in that you cannot apply text alignment afterward.
Solution:
An auto-expanding FreeHand 5 text block can be turned into a FreeHand 4 style text box in one of three ways:
a) Reselect the text box and double-click the two “hollow” -or white- anchor points on the right and bottom boundaries of the box. This allows you to manipulate the text box as though it were a fixed size text block created by clicking and dragging the text tool.
b) Select the text box with the pointer tool. In the Object Inspector, click the right expanding button and the downward expanding button -which are located to the right of the width and height measurements- so that they are no longer highlighted. This produces the same effect as method “a” above.
c) To disable auto-expanding text blocks as a default, go to the Preferences dialog. Select the category “Editing/Text,” and deselect the box that says “New default-sized text containers Auto-Expand.” This disables the auto-expanding text block feature, causing all new text containers to behave as they did in FreeHand 4.
